The Ajman Department of Municipality and Planning has announced the implementation of a series of strategic projects to develop stormwater drainage networks and pumping stations across a number of vital areas in the Emirate, at a total cost exceeding AED 109 million. The projects form part of the Department’s ongoing efforts to enhance infrastructure readiness and raise the efficiency of drainage networks, thereby contributing to the reduction of water accumulation and improving quality of life for residents.
These projects are in alignment with the orientations of Ajman Vision 2030, which seeks to create a modern urban environment that enhances the Emirate’s attractiveness and quality of life.
Dr. Engineer Mohammed Ahmed bin Omair Al Muhairi, Executive Director of the Infrastructure Development Sector at the Department, explained that the projects are being implemented in vital areas and encompass the construction of pumping stations and integrated stormwater drainage networks in the Al Safiya district, Sheikh Zayed Road, and the City Centre — with the aim of increasing the drainage networks’ capacity and enhancing their ability to efficiently accommodate large volumes of rainwater during rainfall events.
He added that the Department is continuing the implementation of the stormwater drainage station project in the Al Safiya district on Abu Musa Island Street, alongside the construction of a pumping station and a main line to discharge accumulated water into Ajman Creek, at a cost of approximately AED 22.5 million. The total length of the project’s network is approximately 5 kilometres. The current completion rate stands at 35% for the drainage networks and 40% for the pumping station, with the project expected to be completed during the fourth quarter of the current year.
Engineer Abdullah Mustafa Al Marzouqi, Director of the Roads and Infrastructure Department, stated that a stormwater collection station is being implemented along Sheikh Zayed Road, from the Sheikh Khalifa Bridge intersection to the Sheikh Maktoum Bridge, in addition to a discharge line to transfer accumulated water to Ajman Creek, at a total cost of AED 25 million. The project includes the construction of a main pumping station and a discharge line of approximately 1,000 metres in length. The current completion rate stands at approximately 40%, with the project scheduled for completion during the fourth quarter of this year.
Al Marzouqi further noted that the Department is continuing the implementation of a stormwater drainage network in the City Centre, comprising an integrated project that includes the construction of drainage networks along Sheikh Abdullah bin Humaid bin Rashid Street and Sheikh Rashid bin Abdulaziz Street, in addition to a main station to discharge water into Ajman Creek, at a cost exceeding AED 61.5 million. The project covers a number of streets and vital areas, with the total length of the drainage networks reaching approximately 8.3 kilometres. The current completion rate stands at 53% for the pumping station and 65% for the drainage networks, with the project expected to be completed during the fourth quarter of the current year.
The Ajman Department of Municipality and Planning affirmed that these vital projects will directly contribute to improving the efficiency of stormwater drainage and reducing water accumulation — thereby enhancing traffic flow and preserving the safety of roads and infrastructure, whilst supporting sustainable development targets and raising the levels of safety and quality of life across the Emirate.
